The Secret to Stress-Free Family Photos in Chicago This Fall
Fall in Chicago is prime time for family photos. The light is golden, the leaves are stunning, and the weather is just right. But if you’ve ever worried about cranky kids, unpredictable weather, or pulling together outfits, you’re not alone. Here’s how to make your Chicago fall family photos smooth, fun, and stress-free.

Timing Is Everything
- Best time of day: Golden hour (an hour before sunset) is gorgeous but works best for older kids. For toddlers, early morning light can be a better fit.
- Best month: Late September through October gives you color, but book early to avoid fully bare trees.
Parent tip: If you’re worried about bedtimes, we can plan a morning session that still gets beautiful light.

What to Wear for Fall Family Photos
- Warm tones like mustard, navy, rust, and deep green always pop.
- Layers (cardigans, vests, scarves) add texture and comfort for unpredictable temps.
- Skip big logos or neon colors-they can distract from your family connection.
Keeping Kids Happy (and Smiling)
- Bring snacks (but avoid messy ones – no goldfish, suckers, or chocolate) – Cheerios and Smarties are great choices.
- Let them bring a favorite small toy-sometimes it makes for the sweetest candid shot.
- Keep expectations realistic: we’ll capture a mix of posed and playful.

What If the Weather Doesn’t Cooperate?
This is Chicago-sometimes it rains, sometimes it’s cold. I will make a call no later than several hours before the session in case of rain or severe cold and we can reschedule, or we can make the most of puddles and umbrellas for fun, candid shots.
