Thinking about bringing your dog to your outdoor photo session? As a Chicago photographer (and dog mom myself), I can tell you it’s one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Dogs bring out genuine smiles, break the ice for camera-shy kids, and honestly… they usually steal the show.
That said, a little planning goes a long way. Here are my favorite tips for making sure your family photos with your dog run smoothly – so everyone (two- and four-legged) has a great time.
Most families want a mix of “all together” shots and some just focusing on the people. That means we’ll need a quick plan for your pup during the people-only moments. A few options:
This is my #1 tip. A trusted friend or family member can wrangle your pup, take them for a short walk, or just keep them happy while we focus on the humans.
If we’re at a nearby spot and the weather is safe (not too hot or too cold), a short break in the car works fine.
Tying your pup to a tree or bench works in a pinch, but it usually means they’ll be a distraction – because they’ll want to be with you, duh! We’ll only use this option if absolutely necessary.
Pro tip: A quick walk before the session almost always leads to a calmer, happier pup in front of the camera.
Not all Chicago spots are pup-perfect. Before we finalize a location, consider:
Some of my favorite pet-friendly Chicago locations include Winnemac Park, The 606 Trail, and Promontory Point.
If your dog is calm, great off-leash, or you simply want them in every photo – that works too! We’ll let them wander naturally into the photos for fun, candid moments.
Dogs add a dose of unpredictability – and that’s part of the magic. I’ll guide you with fun prompts, get down on their level, and always keep treats handy. The goal isn’t “perfectly posed” but portraits that show your family’s real connection… fur and all.
