After the excitement of a newborn photo session, the next perfect opportunity to capture your baby’s growth is during the sitter milestone, typically between 6-8 months. This age range is the perfect time to photograph as your little one showcases a blossoming personality, complete with smiles, giggles, and those big, expressive eyes—perhaps even a few new teeth!
This comprehensive guide will help you make the most out of your sitter milestone portrait session, ensuring you capture these moments beautifully.
The sitter milestone, generally around 6-8 months, marks a significant phase in your baby’s development. By this time, your child may have developed the ability to sit independently, showcasing a range of new expressions and reactions. It’s a fantastic opportunity to capture the joy and curiosity that define this stage.
While some babies sit up as early as six months, others may take a little longer. It’s my opinion to focus on developmental stages rather than specific ages. Every baby progresses at their own pace, and that’s perfectly fine!
If you still want to capture that 6-month mark and that’s what’s more important to you we can definitely make that happen. We will prioritize capturing your child’s current abilities, whether they’re sitting independently or still need a little support. If your baby hasn’t mastered sitting, we’ll incorporate tummy and back poses. We can also use supportive props, like deep buckets, to help them sit. However, the comfort and safety of your baby are paramount. If they feel unstable or scared, we’ll pivot to more comfortable poses.
The session typically lasts 45-60 minutes. We recommend a maximum of two to three outfits, as more changes can overwhelm your little one. I also offer a selection of outfits in my studio, so feel free to use them if you can’t find something suitable at home. We also recommend bringing a bottle and a pacifier if you baby takes them. This is also a fun age for naked baby photos – those squishy thighs and dimpled butt. And they can’t crawl or run away!
Babies can be unpredictable, but scheduling the session during a time when your baby is usually well-rested and content is ideal. Mornings or post-nap times are generally the best. A well-rested and well-fed baby is a happy baby.
It’s best to have your baby fully fed before the session starts. However, if they need a quick feed during the shoot, we can pause to accommodate this. A satisfied baby is more likely to engage and smile for the camera.
At this age, “stranger danger” may just be starting. Your baby might be shy or even a bit fussy around new faces. Additionally, teething may cause discomfort, affecting their mood. Don’t worry; we’ll take the time needed to make your little one feel comfortable and capture their true essence.
The sitter session is all about celebrating your baby’s unique personality. From their inquisitive gazes to their infectious laughter, this is the perfect time to document these characteristics.
We encourage bringing personal items that your baby loves or finds comforting. Whether it’s a favorite blanket, a stuffed animal, or a beloved toy, these items can help make the session more personal and engaging. Additionally, our studio wardrobe is available, featuring cute outfits that are perfect for this special stage.
Beyond the big smiles and adorable outfits, we also focus on the little details—those tiny toes, chubby cheeks, and maybe even the first few teeth making an appearance. These small details are precious memories you’ll cherish forever.
The sitter milestone is a beautiful and fleeting moment in your baby’s life. Capturing this stage through a professional portrait session is a wonderful way to preserve these memories. Whether your baby is sitting up independently or still finding their balance, we’ll create a relaxed and enjoyable experience, resulting in stunning images you’ll treasure for years.
