Let’s be honest for a second. The words “family photo session” don’t always spark joy when you’re wrangling a kid in a mismatched sock, hunting down a missing shoe, or bribing someone to brush their hair before you walk out the door. (Also, why do toddlers always pick photo day to stage a full-scale rebellion?)
If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Most families feel a little nervous when photo day rolls around. The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful. Trust me – with a little preparation and a mindset shift, your family session can actually feel fun, natural, and even (dare I say it?) enjoyable for your kids.
Let me walk you through how we make that happen in the studio here at Michele Taylor Photography.

I’ve worked with plenty of moms who show up to their session already exhausted by everything it took to get their family out the door. And when your little one is melting down five minutes before we start? Been there, seen it, totally normal.
But here’s the truth no one tells you: those big personalities, those unexpected giggles (or grumbles), those tender sibling cuddles mixed with chaotic silliness… that’s what makes your session uniquely yours. And it’s my job to create space for those real moments – even when the day doesn’t go as planned.
So let’s tackle that anxiety at the root. Here’s how to set your kids (and yourself) up for a stress-free studio photography session that captures your family’s personality beautifully.

Timing can be everything (and this is one of the major perks of a studio session). No need to plan around unpredictable weather or limited daylight.
If you’ve got little ones, aim for a time when they’re rested, fed, and not deep in their pre-nap crankiness. Morning sessions tend to work well, but we can tailor the schedule to fit your child’s happiest time of day.
Yes, we want them to look cute – but not at the expense of comfort. If your child hates wearing jeans, don’t force it. If a sweater is itchy, it’ll be ripped off before we get a single shot. Trust your gut.
Pro Tip: Let them help pick an accessory or choose between two outfits. Giving them a bit of control reduces resistance and boosts confidence.
Low blood sugar is not your friend on photo day. Pack a few tidy snacks that are quick and familiar – nothing too sticky, crumbly, or colorful (looking at you, goldfish crackers). We also have snacks in the studio!
And don’t forget water! Hydration does wonders for cooperation.
Bonus tip: Comfort items like a beloved stuffed animal or blanket can help ease nerves and sometimes even make a sweet cameo in your images.
You don’t need to bribe your kids or promise them dessert (although, no judgment if you do). Just let them know it’s going to be fun. No pressure to be perfect, no stiff poses, no “say cheese.” Let them know we’ll play, laugh, and cuddle – and that’s exactly what I want to see.
The best photos aren’t the ones where everyone’s stiffly smiling at the camera. They’re the ones where your daughter is climbing into your lap mid-giggle or your son’s sneaking a hug he’d usually be “too cool” to give. That’s what we’re after.
This is not a formal portrait studio that expects Instagram-polished perfection. This is a cozy space for honesty – the kind with belly laughs, gentle chaos, and twinkly eyes that show real love. Don’t tell the kids, but we’ll likely get that polished photo as well…I’m just a master at sneaking it in while they’re having fun!

These aren’t just photos. They’re little time capsules of right now – wild cowlicks, wobbly toddler steps, missing front teeth, teenager attitude and all. It’s easy to think it needs to look perfect to be meaningful, but it’s the imperfections and quirks that make your family’s legacy so special.
One day, you’ll open an album and be instantly taken back to this season – the hugs, the chaos, the sweetness of it all. Preparing your kids helps them feel comfortable enough to let their personalities shine, and that’s when the magic really happens.
If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried it’ll be too much work or your kids won’t cooperate, I see you. I really do.
